If you’re already a Primal Health Coach or on your way to becoming one, congratulations! You’re got everything you need to help those among the 117 million people in our world who are battling chronic diseases, extra weight, and poor health due to a SAD diet and sedentary lifestyle.

Your PHCI certification gives you the solid ancestral health knowledge, the intensive coaching skills, and the business-building know-how to get your health coaching career off the ground.

But maybe you’re wondering if you need to add more certifications. I’ve seen this question bouncing around our Primal Health Coach Institute social media pages, and, like most things in life, the answer is it depends.

Do you need more? Ask yourself these questions:

  • Am I providing services that require additional licenses by law?
  • Am I focusing on a specific niche where extra knowledge might be helpful?
  • Am I operating out of fear and believe that more certifications will make me appear more qualified?

These are important distinctions—ones we’re going to dig a little deeper into in today’s post.

1. It’s a Legal Requirement

Say you want to add something like massage therapy or other body work to your services. In most states, you’d need to get an additional license for that. Same goes for athletic trainers and registered dietitians. However, keep in mind that to qualify for liability insurance (which you need to have as a self-employed person working in the health and fitness industry), most carriers require that you’re certified and/or licensed depending on what services you offer. As always, check the laws for your specific state.

2. You’re Focused on a Niche

It’s natural to want to hone in on a niche that’s important to you—likely one that’s impacted you in some way. While it’s not mandatory to obtain additional certifications, it does give you more specialized knowledge and expertise in certain fields. And more acronyms to add to your credentials.

If you’re passionate about fitness and movement, you may want to look into:

To become specialized in different aspects of nutrition, you might consider:

Or if you’re interested in going deeper with behavior change and mindset, think about:

3. You Aren’t Sure You’re Ready

Everyone experiences self-doubt here and there, especially when there’s a new career at stake. You may feel like you’re not ready. Or that you don’t know enough. Trust me, you are and you do. You wouldn’t have received your health coaching certification otherwise. Having some fears about getting out there and coaching clients is actually quite common. As we wrote about in one of our blog posts a few months ago, those fears are also easy to overcome. No one’s going to judge you for not having a lengthy list of certifications next to your name. And if they do for some reason, they’re not the right client for you.

Keep in mind that taking on more certifications can get pricey, not to mention time-consuming. So, if it’s just a matter of learning new or more information, you might choose to continue your education by reading books and research that inspire you like Primal Health Coach Rachel Barber does.

Do You Need More Certifications?

Unless an additional certification or license is required by law, try not to get caught up in the idea that you need more knowledge before you even get out there. Your passion and your health coaching certification are enough. Down the road, you may want to add certifications that you’re excited about, but don’t let that hold you back from pursuing your dream of working as a health coach right now. It’s normal to want to be the best at what you do, but sometimes you just have to get out there and do it!
