What Should a Health Coaching Certification Course Cost?

A health coaching certification course should be a one-stop shop that provides a comprehensive nutrition/health education, complementary coaching training, business building guidance, and a built-in infrastructure for the operation of your practice.

In determining the cost of a health coaching certification course, let’s break each of these components into separate offerings.

#1 Nutrition/Health Education

There are several avenues available for obtaining a nutrition/health education. You may be considering a degree in Nutrition Sciences. According to the U.S. Department of Education’s 2015-2016 IPEDS Survey, the average out-of-state cost for a BS in Nutrition Sciences is $42,078 a year ($168,312 for 4 years). A two-year associate program averages $18,186 each year. Depending on the university, a Masters in Nutrition Science can cost as much as $65,000 a year.

Online programs for nutrition education run cheaper at an average of $5,640 to $13,960, and are probably a better investment for an aspiring health coach.

#2 Coaching Education

A health coach is more than just a library of health and fitness knowledge. A health coach is a guide, a leader, a motivator for change, and as such needs to hone his/her coaching skills, making a coaching education an absolute necessity for successfully maneuvering through the client/coach relationship.

Coaching trainings typically range from $6,000 to $9,000. The Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching (iPEC) costs $9,895 for the complete program, including instruction, mentor coaching, and materials. Coaches Training Institute (CTI) takes about a year to complete and costs approximately $10,000-12,000. Coach U, another top coaching program, is $6,090 plus the cost of textbooks.

#3 Business Training

There are many different business training courses offered online or through community colleges, but they carry a hefty price tag, especially when taken one course at a time. Stanford’s Center for Professional Development online Building Business Models course, for instance, costs $995. According to a U.S. News report, online university courses cost $300-$400 per credit hour, and several have application fees that cost as much as $50. Tack on online course and technology fees and the cost for textbooks, and you can be spending as much as $1,300 on just one course. At the bare minimum, you’ll need courses geared toward starting a business, marketing a business, and managing a business.

Taking the cheapest option for each of these alternative programs gives us a grand total of $12,630.

Nutrition Education:

Coaching Education:

How Much Is Your Time Worth?

When assessing the cost of a health coaching certification it’s important to take into account not just the amount of money being saved by combining a health education, coaching training, and business building and support into one package, but the amount of time it saves.

Without the ongoing support of a health coaching program, it can take years to scale your business and build the necessary infrastructure to make health coaching your full-time career. It takes time to develop materials and customizable systems to use with clients. A health coaching certification with a built-in practicum frees up your time significantly and lessens the learning curve. With the material support from our Business Resource Center, including done-for-you logos, handouts, forms, and marketing assets, and our ready-made 12-Week Coaching Program to use with clients, you’ll accelerate your health coaching practice so that you’re full-time and flourishing as quickly as possible.
